Trivium
24 August 2005
Camden Barfly, London

Tonight`s gig was the conclusion of the "Kerrang! Most Wanted" week of gigs, which preceded the magazine`s annual awards. The week had included shows by Killing Joke, Therapy? and, erm, Fightstar at the intimate 200 capacity Camden Barfly.

Ascendancy is the name of Trivium`s latest album and the title is apt with their soaring popularity evidenced by them being bumped up to the main stage at Download and a swift change from the Mean Fiddler to the Astoria for their show in London next month. It is little surprise then that tickets for tonight`s show sold out in a mere 40 minutes.

As it`s a Kerrang! show, there`s no chance of a photopass hence Johan enjoyed a night off. Similarly making any notes was a non-starter as we were so packed in I could hardly raise my arm to write.

The End Of Everything introduction ushers the band onto the small stage with Rain kicking off proceedings and indeed the crowd. Thrashing riffing, melodic twin harmonies and catchy choruses, it`s all here and it`s difficult to pick highlights from the set that was consistently good.

Matt Heafy is the ringmaster, his confidence at times bordering on cockiness. He tells us that The Deceived got seven circle pits at Download and he wants the place to go wild. There`s not much room for a pit, but the fastest song to Trivium`s name is most likely causing a few neck aches this morning.

Although Heafy is the obvious centre of attention Corey Beaulieu, Travis Smith and Paolo Gregoletto all play their part in ensuring the band are impossibly tight. The lead work of Beaulieu is particularly impressive.

Mid set the band launch into the opening riffs of Machine Head`s Davidian and Rob Flynn appears on stage looking slightly embarrassed his song is being played. Flynn asks us if we`ve heard of a band called Sepultura, as Roots commences a medley which also contained Creeping Death, Walk and The Trooper. For the latter, the crowd provide the vocals with thankfully no chants of Ozzy or egg throwing.

Flynn departs, but Trivium continue with covers songs with Master Of Puppets, which sits well amongst Trivium`s own material. Heafy promises some tunes from debut Ember To Inferno on the forthcoming September UK tour.

A Gunshot To The Head Of Trepidation with its fist pumping stadium chant middle section and Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr close a blistering set.

There are quite a few bands of a similar style to Trivium, but with Ascendancy the bar was raised. It will be very interesting to see how the other bands respond and indeed how Trivium follow it up.
